Lesson Learned

Community Garden, Friday, before weeding.

It’s only May and I’ve already learned a valuable gardening related lesson.  Straw makes a lovely mulch in Fall and Winter, but in Spring, it sprouts.  This meant a great deal of additional weeding.  Here, let me show you what I mean. I planted kale and broccoli raab in the pool garden, but guess what… [Read more…]

Return of the Porch Garden

May 14, 2012

The two little pots on the table are for herbs.

About two weeks ago, before I went out of town, I took an afternoon and got my porch garden in order.  It had gotten unruly over the winter, and needed some serious tending.  There are peas just starting to sprout out the now, and I’ll be transferring my starters out there sometime this month.  Here… [Read more…]

The Thai Peacock had a wonderful menu and very courteous staff. My dinner of vegetable coconut soup and sticky rice was delicious.

I haven’t been posting much lately, but I’ve got a good one for you today.  I spent part of this week in Portland, OR.  I’ve never been there before and it was a really amazing opportunity to visit a new part of the country.  Given my personal interests, it was also a good opportunity to… [Read more…]

April 27, 2012

I haven’t had much time to blog lately, but I wanted to share part three of this series of articles with you.  (Here’s part 1 and part 2 in case you’re just dropping in now.) Feeding the world is a hot button issue.  Politicians talk about it, activists talk about it, and big agri-businesses talk… [Read more…]

And then there were four...

Some of you may have been around last year when Accomplice 1,  Accomplice 2a, and I first put in our pool gardens.  (If you missed it check them out here.)  I went out to work on my pool on Thursday.  I was excited to find that a good number of earth worms have worked their… [Read more…]

Pretty Little Carrots, All in a Row

April 11, 2012

It's still cool, so after planting I covered the bed in straw.

On Sunday I planted carrots.  First I divided the bed in two with a small fence, as the other half will eventually be planted in melons.  I had left my measuring tape in another coat, but luckily I had two 4 foot poles in the car and was able to estimate the row spacing fairly… [Read more…]

The Great Outdoors

April 7, 2012

I covered the beds with a "garden blanket" to keep in the heat and keep out the weed seeds.

This week Thursday I did my first bit of outdoor planting.  I don’t trust March to stay warm, but spinach needs cold weather to germinate, so I decided to give it a try.  Have you planted anything outdoors yet?

Gardening by the Moon

The seeds, planted and labeled.

This last week has been very busy, but I did manage to get some gardening done, despite the chilly turn our weather has taken in Michigan.  This year I’m trying a new method to time my plantings, called gardening by the moon.  My Grandmother recommends it, and I trust her gardening advice.  To that end,… [Read more…]
