Nice and Toasty

Tonight is the kind of cold that sparkles.  The world is made of ice crystals.  Even the air seems sharp, like a pane of glass.  As beautiful as it is, and as much as I wanted the snow to come, I really really want to be warm.  So I’m having one of these:

Spiked Spiced Hot Chocolate

Get out your favorite mug.  Mix together 1 Tbsp baking cocoa, 1-2 Tbsp sugar (less will create a deeper chocolate flavor), and 1/4 tsp cinnamon.  Heat 1 1/2 cups of water (1 cup if your mug is on the small side) nearly to boiling.  Combine the water with the dry ingredients in your mug and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.  Add 1 ounce of spiced rum, a dash of cayenne pepper, and stir gently.  Enjoy.

Variations

  • Alcohol free – omit the rum, add 1/2 tsp vanilla and a dash of nutmeg.
  • Dairy – reduce water to 1/2 cup and add 1 cup milk or half and half.
  • Fruity – replace the rum with a shot of raspberry liqueur.
